Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency and the National Police Agency warned the public that online offshore casino gaming could land them in jail. According to the warning, online gambling is illegal even if online casinos operate legally overseas.
Japanese authorities said that they would arrest online casino uses. They said gambling is a crime and people should stay away from it.
Online Offshore Casino Gaming is Illegal in Japan
The warning included two examples of online gaming users in Japan that have been arrested. The first person was arrested for using his desktop at home to access an online casino. Also, the company operated the gambling platform overseas and played a dealer on the website. Thus, he was arrested for online gambling activities.
The second person arrested was someone who allowed another user to use his computer to access an offshore gaming site. Thus, he was also arrested for a crime related to gambling activities. However, checking betting odds is not a crime. According to online gambling reviews and news reports, it becomes one when you wagered on sports through an online sportsbook while in Japan.
According to Japanese rules and regulations, the government will fine you around $3,300 and three years of prison time. The NPA made 18 arrests in 2019, 16 in 2020, and 16 in 2021 for crimes connected to online offshore casinos. However, the arrests took place at gambling establishments.
