A campaign to consider the legalization of Maryland sports betting has been ongoing in the last several months. Also, it receives an amount of $750,000 from the industry giants DraftKings and FanDuel. However, the Maryland voters are to decide whether or not to legalize sports betting.
It will take place on this year’s highly contested elections on November 3, 2020. Maryland is far from being the only US state seeking to alter the existing gambling laws wholly.
“Vote Yes on Question 2” Campaign to Legalize Maryland Sports Betting
The ongoing push to legalize Maryland sports betting chairman is Marissa Coleman. She is a former WNBA and University of Maryland basketball player. A “Vote to Yes on Question 2” Campaign officially launched a multi-platform media advertising since securing the vital funding.
For “Vote Yes on Question 2” to appear on November’s ballot at all, state legislators have to first sign off on the motion. At the time, legislators estimate a $20 to $40 million could be generated from legal state-wide sports wagering. Wherein it can also specifically fund education.
FanDuel and DraftKings Significant Investment
FanDuel and DraftKings, are two of the most popular sportsbooks in the US, providing the best sports betting odds. Since July, they have significantly invested in the prospect of legal gambling in Maryland, adding a collective weight behind Coleman’s campaign.
DraftKings previously contributes $250,000 in Coleman’s efforts in July. While in early September, FanDuel’s investment for the campaign amounts to $500,000. It is a decision that came after seeing a campaign finance report. Furthermore, the company plans to invest between $1 million and $1.5 million.
More States Legalize During the Pandemic
The argument of the legalization of sports wagering is not new in the US states. There are back-to-back decisions for new law in Ohio, Louisiana bills are currently on its final step to complete before becoming a law. Illinois, on the other hand, opens new opportunities for local gambling industries.
In the new Ohio Law, once approved, it will significantly expand the number of locations and groups which could legally offer sports betting. It includes land casinos, as well as race tracks, and veterans’ organizations. Additionally, online casino sites will also be allowed.
However, Louisiana, what will likely happen is that sports betting will be legal in some parts of the state, but not universally. And Illinois, on the other hand, allows online legal sports betting in the country. The measure means offering a solution to the gambling industry in the state, which struggled tremendously during the pandemic.
