Ever since the legalization of sports betting in the U.S. sports league are changing their opinion about wagering on sports. The latest U.S. sports league to change their opinion is the PGA (Professional Golfers Association). According to an interview by PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan, the PGA is ready to have Golf Betting Available Next year.
The interview with Monahan was given privately with the AFP during Japans inaugural Zozo Championship. During the interview, Monahan said that “You’ll start to see (gambling) product in the market place next year”. Furthermore, he said the goal is to attract new fans by allowing them to bet on golf with PGA gambling.
An Official PGA Gambling Product
There are various reasons for the PGA to roll out their own gambling products. Of course, the obvious reason is money as shown recently with the NBA cashing in on basketball betting thru various methods. However, for Monahan it is also way to make the golf tournament more exciting. This is because it is not unusual to have a golf game last for up to 12 hours. Thus, for new golf fans or regular fans, it is a very long time to watch an event.
Monahan believes that it is all about engaging fans and golf betting is the way to go. This is because “when done right, it gives fans the opportunity to engage with your sport over a longer period of time”. Thus, you have “more interest in what’s happening across the entire player field”.
In addition, by having their own PGA gambling product, he believes it will give them more control over golf betting. Therefore, by having their own PGA Gambling Product, they an ensure the integrity and monitoring of it.
Unfortunately, Monahan did not go into any details about their gambling product launch for next year. Several online gambling websites are wondering if it will be an actual sports betting platform or simply PGA data.
